In March 2012 Hannes de Villiers & Johan Potgieter visited August Basson from Growing Nations regarding Farming God’s way or also known as Foundation for Farming (conservation agriculture). A conversation surrounding the EvangeCube & HIV Cube lead to an invitation to return to Growing Nations.
A new partnership with Growing Nations, Lesotho.
We met August Basson from Growing Nations in March for discussion on Farming God’s way as well as Mission4x4 outreaches in 2013. August asked Hannes to return to train the volunteers & staff in the use of the EvangeCube & HIV/AIDS Cube. Growing Nations, is a holistic combination of pastoring (running a local LEC Church), HIV education, teaching the principles of Growing Nations (www.growingnations.co.za). Whilst planning a training outreach to Sterkspruit we decided to combine the two visits and save costs.
Meeting inspirational people
Leaving for Lesotho on a Sunday in October 2012, we travelled through the beautifull eastern Free State towns, crossing the border at Van Rooyen’s Gate close to Wepener. From there you travel using GPS, arial maps, and memory of previous visits. The road is a beautifull tar-road, untill the turn-off on an unmarked gravel road where you soon realise you will need a 4×4 or at least high clearance vehicle with diff-lock in the rainy season. Although you can get there with a 2×4, you will need to travel very slowly and choose your lines carefully to avoid damage.
This time of year Growing Nations receives several visitors and we camped in a beautifull bush where once erosion was, next to the Maphutseng river. There were two other outreach teams – high school students from Stellenbosch doing agricultural work and a team of retired professionals who came to erect a roof on a new building. This group of 5 men and a lady was truly an inspiration – at their age, with all their experience they wisely applied their knowledge, time and skills to do something so practical with a long term value.
During our fellowship on Monday night, we met wonderful volunteers from Britain, America, Kenya, South Africa & Lesotho who committed their time to teach, work practically, give of themselves and came to learn from Growing Nations.
HIV & Evangelism Training
Hannes started the training presenting evangelism using the EvangeCube and Elzaan followed with “train the trainer” on HIV Prevention Education using both the HIV iPosters & HIV/AIDS Cube. Each attendee, who included Stellenbosch Students, British & American volunteers, Lesotho teachers and pastors & two student famers from Kenya received a resource pack and training manual.
One pastor from Lesotho already had a HIV Cube but said that he was not sure how to use it due to a lack of training. He was very excited and shared his experiences as the training proceeded. A visiting student from Kenya told us that HIV is a major problem in Kenya’s agricultural sector and how excited he was to have tools to now share the Gospel and HIV!
The role-play and post training presentations by the students were filled with fun and laughter as they presented their newly acquired knowledge and skills to the class.
